Are there any companies out there that allow a 20/80 schedule, meaning 80% working on own projects?


Yes - the vast majority of open source projects are run this way.

The down side is that you don't get paid. And I think that's pretty consistent -- no one is going to pay market rates for you to spend 80% of your time on "whatever you like".


VC firms do. They call it Entrepreneur in Residence.
