We worry about the “bus problem” when it comes to one dev operations but should we also worry about the “dev getting bored” problem?
I’m not sure what’s happened to Pinboard I hope Maciej is alright.
I tweeted him ages ago asking about if the pin a URL page could become responsive so I don’t have to use a separate mobile app. He’s responded with a joke. Years later and I’m still using the mobile app.
>> should we also worry about the “dev getting bored” problem?
This is one thing I worry about. I would love to start a one dev, money making, app...but I know me, I'll get bored. I would have to find something that I am really passionate about where any $$ is just a consequence of what I made and enjoy working on.
I’ve tried building in load tests to releases and it’s been a headache so far:
Test environments cost as much as prod environments suddenly (using premium versions of infrastructure to meet requirements)
Pipelines take a lot longer to run (because the load test environments are expensive we have one or two and serialize test runs on them to stop test runs stepping on each other, but the teardowns are slow, especially on failed runs)
To keep the test run fast we limit them to about 5 minutes but this creates unrealistic expectations of how fast our code would actually need to scale.
But it is nice knowing which changes have broken the load test. Hunting them down is so painful.
What I’d to have is proper metrics showing how close we are to our Non Functional Requirements over time to make it easier to sell “Performance stories” ahead of breaking the NFR rather than just fixing it as we break.
Hi James, I'm working on a load testing tool product. Any chance I could talk to you about your headaches, and how you do things? I'm trying to learn what people are doing now, and where the pain is. Maybe you could tell me if my ideas are crazy--I am taking a different approach than what's out there. :-) I'm at ebeland on gmail.
I still can’t believe that the Silvertown Tunnel, the next Thames crossing will require a modern version of this rather than have a dedicated cycle space.
I appreciate cycling close to cars in a tunnel won’t be pleasant but we are slowly moving away from the internal combustion engine, the air will get better and better as electric gets more popular.
That depends on mass EV takeup, and the problem is that particulate pollution will hardly be reduced as EVs are significantly heavier and particulate pollution is mostly from brakes and tyres.
Is dotnet 6 support slated to release with godot 4 or will it be a post-initial release timeframe? Last I heard it wasn't ready yet but I have not been looking too closely. Having latest dotnet would get me interested in trying godot again over downloading Unity onto my new laptop when I get back to gamedev.
I'd be starting a new game from scratch since my last few game dev forays have been Unity so not having mobile support at launch is a non-factor for me (and mind you I dunno how crazy making cross compat games between PC and mobile even is so I may not care for a good while).
Appreciate pointing to it being pulled into master though, increases my likelyhood of trying Godot again as I've been working in dotnet 6 more and more on personal stuff of late!
I agree. I was using Pinboard for a long time but with the pricing changes and lack of support, I switched to self-hosting LinkAce (https://www.linkace.org).
> I’d much prefer just being able to use the site on mobile
When's the last time you tried that? Sometime in the past year ish (can't remember exact dates), it got updated to scale properly on narrow screens, and I've had no problem using it on mobile since then.
Stuff like Spotify trying to ram their podcast platform down my throat is pretty obnoxious. I wish I could turn off podcasts.
It looks especially bad when some of the podcasts are unofficial audiobooks releasing for instance a person reading a chapter of Harry Potter every day.
I’ve used laptops for this purpose in the past but I always disliked having my HDDs connected over USB.
I was concerned that all my storage felt like it was active all the time even when not being accessed, I was always concerned my drives would burn out faster but I never had any data to back it up.
Interesting to read in the current context of the Silvertown tunnel currently being built despite complaints from both sides of the river and an admission from TFL that it may make traffic worse south of the river.
Not to mention the fact that cyclists can’t use the tunnel…
I wonder about whether the Silvertown Tunnel will make the average traffic worse but the worst case traffic better.
Currently, if the Blackwall tunnel closes, traffic basically grinds to a halt across a huge part of SE London. I was taking my dying bunny to the vet the other month and a trip that normally takes under ten minutes took forty due to the Blackwall tunnel being closed, even though I'm all the way back in Hither Green.
Nevertheless, I would have preferred they built one of the many proposed pedestrian/cycling bridges...
To be fair the congestion in that area is also because of a significant number of the side roads across Lewisham/Greenwich having been closed to enable the low traffic neighbourhoods - much needed but making congestion awful as a consequence.
So to keep TfL afloat the government has to give them money and as part of that they have to spend a large amount of money investigating something most people don’t think is viable.
Seems like a good use of public funds.
