I am a long time Debian Netinst (terminal) user, and Mint Cinnamon for Desktop. OPNSense run on FreeBSD and it just works.

My personal issue is that I do not believe FreeBSD will give me a smooth experience to get my GPU and what not running. On Mint Cinnamon, I only had to install the latest supported kernel to get my RTX and WiFi6 card recognised.

Debian, the reason why I run Debian as a server everywhere, even in my 3D printer is because it just work, and not just that.

I only run Debian Netinst version, that means to only install standard system and SSH, text mode is the way.

We are talking about 300MB of memory being used by Pihole + Unbound Recursive DNS of 512MB running on a Debian 13.

Disk space?? 1GB or so I guess.

These are my blockers to even try raw FreeBSD, lack of proper hardware support and as a server even if I remove everything I can, I do not imagine FreeBSD running with 300MB/1G of resources.

Not to mention if you work in IT in any way, the last thing you wanna is fighting the system you use to solve another problem, that is why I left Ubuntu after 13years or so, it is a Windows within the Linux world now.

A distro Linux must just run, no dramas, no issues, major system release goes like nothing happened. That matters!!!

I wanna to build a Proxmox LXC container via Ansible playbook, both things I know and use in my homelab.

It has to be 4 services running within the same container, VPN and what not. That would take me forever to find the latest and recommended:

* Each service installation proccess

* Known issues and workaround

* Firewall and what not

It sill took me 3 nights because I had to replace one of the services. I am not expert into iptables firewall, it helped me with that.

Ansible playbook was a hit and miss but it gave me the start so I fixed what was wrong and voila.

The problem is people using it for copy/paste, it works it is good enough. No understand of what is happening, security issues and alike.

I have my phone set as backup and because I am guilty of the +5 minutes

I always wake up between 5-30 minutes before it goes off, if I have something important the next day tho, I don't sleep at all because my brain won't let me :)

The data center owners aren't the ones selling new GPUs.

They are selling access to GPU computation. Seeking their used GPUs would flood the market with cheap competitors using their old GPUs.

If the GPUs were competitive with their own, they wouldn't be selling them off.

AI in general is ruining companies as a whole.

Companies are finding out the hard way that replacing engineers with AI, is costing them twice as much to fix the problem and having to hire people again.

If I get fired because a company went crazy into AI, things went bad, and they call me back, you sure as hell I am not returning.

Hey there! This is the exact thing that happened (although I cannot say I was a perfect employee). They replaced me for a relatively important product, where I was already the only dev along with 4 PMs that never agreed on each other.

The entire company is hell, it made that switch overnight and never looked back at the devs that have to endure all this bullshit.

Luckily I found another company that treats devs as humans. I've convinced one other employee at $EX_COMPANY to make the switch, with success! I'm planning to find everyone there a proper job that doesn't make u feel like you're under surveillance.
