Reminds me that anecdote, not sure who it was, he was wondering where are the Caesars or the Hitlers of our time, all that brand of ambitious, manipulative and dominant personalities. The answer, he found, was that nowadays those people are absorbed into corporate instead of going into politics.

Well, not your fault, most of the resources out there are just made to make a buck, or a click, it's pretty much hopeless nowadays. What I do usually is I try to find used books, they're cheap and often better. Doesn't work for all subjects obviously.

For C++, I'd download a working draft of the standard, that + examples on stackoverflow will teach you more than a 6 foot stacks of the latest books on the subject.

Love was invented by advertisers to sell nylons...

This is cynicism. The original poster's complaints are not cynicism -- they are legitimate dissatisfaction and unhappiness with exploitation and manipulation. Legitimate dissatisfaction turns to cynicism when its sufferer concludes that some human relations are exploitative, so they all must be. The cure for cynicism is to recognize that it is still possible to make connections that are not exploitative and manipulative, and to seek out and nourish those.

(I realize this comment might have been intended as a joke, but this sort of bitter humor is often a symptom of real cynicism.)

Yes, half a joke, also a quote from Don Draper in Madmen. Great cynic character :)

Looks like 1917 russian revolution to me... no, thank you.

There were two revolutions in Russia in 1917.

If you mean the communist one, then their program was rather different, and included things such as "dictatorship of the proletariat".

"Conservatives are anti-science": no downvote. "Liberals are anti-biology": downvote.

HN is funny...

Can you give some examples of liberals being anti-biology? That seems so far from even the common stereotypes of liberals that I'm genuinely not sure what you're talking about.

I'll add one more: the existence of a hereditary basis of intelligence.

There are some legitimate concerns there. However, given that the current Republican White House is outright censoring government science agencies on a large scale[1][2] when their results are politically inconvenient, it's pretty laughable to claim that leftists are the real science-haters.

This article was published before the 2016 election, so at the time it might have been merely naive, but I see that the author has a video from just a few months ago where he "explains that the real war on science is the one from the left." He is absolutely not arguing in good faith.

This must be that whataboutism I've been hearing about. My greater point was that political extremists all across the spectrum have the bad habit of rejecting science when it conflicts with their dogma. The problem is amplified the more they are emotionally invested in an issue. A lot of people think its just "the other guys" that are guilty of it, partly due to selection bias, and partially due to just over-scrutinizing the other side in general.

Well known fact: no downvote. Transphobic dog-whistle: downvote.

exercise, a lot of walk in parks, daily and also when feeling in "hell" during the day, and also developing a spirituality, very important to find a way to deal with the bigger questions...

Thinkpad E560 owner here, bought it a couple of years ago for less than $500 on newegg, installed ubuntu on it and that's it. Dropped it a few times, and work like 8-10 hours a day on it, never had any issue. Solid.

Pain is also linked to fear, so more mindfulness, less fear and less pain. Some people, while physically training can inflict extreme pains on their bodies, but without any fear whatsoever, so they're ok, even enjoying it for some, "working hard!"

"The game is hard so I cheated!" Do you think it's a good way to start a business relationship?

Some say cheater, others say "gifted analyst".

"A visa too! Wow, a fascinating problem with multiple dimensions to consider. And here at the center of it, a gifted analyst. I wonder what kind of theory or model could be drafted, something that fits the situation like a glove _and_ exposes critical leverage points. If anyone could do it...(points at you)"

I haven't cheated yet because I have ethical doubts about it. But my resolve is slipping because I have tried every other conceivable option for trying to get a job.

I looked at your resume for exactly 5 seconds before I closed it again, so I think it really might be you(r resume).

Also I'm not sure if you tried ever conceivable option. If you know some Latex, fill out this template and you should be off a lot better: https://github.com/xdanaux/moderncv

Religion/spirituality is a great asset, especially as we get older.
