I have done that before in a previous job, the end result is I was further alienated. Members of the team distanced themselves from me for fear of saying something wrong or reported. In the end, I had to change jobs because I couldn't fit in.
I suppose its not a problem of race, but a problem of just being different from others, like Age in you case.
Working for a start-up is a career opportunity, no matter how short the duration.
Most people who join start-up companies, have long term goals to start something later on in life, and the experience you get from working on almost all aspects of the business, and take part in critical decision making is highly invaluable in this regard.
Some people just like the excitement that comes with the uncertainty, and if all things fail, you can always get another job or start something if you are adventurous.
This post appears to come from a Sales (or businessy) person who tend to prefer a stable environment as against risk and excitement imo.
This helps me to unwind, I actually cycle to work and swim once a week, so far I am in good mental shape, but lack any motivation to work on the project and in that environment.
The difference with me is that my client has a rough knowledge of the tools I use, and even make false assumptions about implementation detail.
Sometimes I get pseudo-code as spec requirements, or get told 'solutions' instead of elaborating on the problems at hand. So, I don't get the chance to learn any new stuff besides what's in the pot.
On side projects, the problem is, I have always been passionate about whatever I am work on and have no energy left for side projects. I guess I should just 'grind things out' as you mentioned, and perhaps focus energy on things I care most about, but won't this hamper on productivity?
That might be how it's being played - the NSA surveillance is a useful story to push individual countries agendas, but what they're really after is complete control of domestic communications. It's not countries "breaking free from the US", rather the beginning of the balkanization of the internet.
Back to the good old days when all communications where under the countrys PTT and in third world country's was a nice source of foreign cash to be spirited away to a Swiss banck account.
Thats why Postmaster general was such a plum Job in that sort of country.
