You can hike right up to / behind the sign if you want to go there. The hike itself is an experience. The tram will enable the tourists who don't want to hike. I do agree with your sentiment that it will take away some of the magic from the current experience.

No, it's not; it's on a hill in a large urban park (Griffith Park) with established hiking trails leading up.


That’s part of the fun. You have to figure that out, while driving past the signs that say “No Hollywood Sign Access”.


I mean you can just walk up to it - you don't need to hike anywhere. It's in the middle of urban environment. It's not somewhere in the wilds.
