Humans are good at min/maxing. It's how we developed all the way to modern society from tribes of people in hides stabbing things with sticks. There are all kinds of things that are benchmarks that humans do, even if we don't call them benchmarks. In the modern world these are extremely evident. Take credit scores, the resume process, all the different tests you have in school and college, exams for licensing. People benchmark each other for relationships all the time. Would you date someone that lost all their money all the time, or that wasn't clean. To do those things you set a standard, which is the definition of a benchmark.
