Hoping all these DCs and AI whatnots turn out to be a flop, so that we’ll get plenty ddr5 at sale price :D

even if they're a flop, you'll be told they're too big to fail. And now, you have to bail them out and buy their HBM instead of paying for your RAM

I hope that China makes up for the capacity that RAM producers are not willing to produce, so that the latter are sent back to the past (with no bailout nor protectionism)

You hope you and I will depend more on China? That won't fix any unbalanced market, it will move you another step towards a vertical structure..

It's better than depending on the US at least.

IIRC this wont be possible as a lot of them aren't being packaged on traditional DDR memory boards. They're being put on things like the MI350X.

I'm sure there will be a ton of standard DDR5 sticks, but not so much from AI-only datacenters.

China has a cottage industry around taking apart circuit boards and reusing the chips in unexpected ways. That's how you get desktop MBs with soldered laptop CPUs. HBM and DDR aren't compatible as far as I'm aware, but they might be able to do something. Maybe they'll invent a converter chip.

Even better, looking forward to having hardware like that at home for "cheap" in the future, compared to what it costs right now :)

The MI350X has a 1000W TDP. Maybe I'd use it in the winter.

My workstation is 1600W TDP and my office does get a bit cold in the winter, so it would do just fine next to us :)

Maybe we can get a few MI350P's out of that then :) Surely it will be easy to do :clueless:

On a more serious note, I do wonder if it would theoretically be possible to put HBM on something like CAMM instead of regular DDR? I have not done any research on this.

Expecting a pivot back to transitional parts if it goes bang.
