Why was '~' chosen to represent the home directory...
I memorized HJKL thusly: • H and L are leftmost and rightmost keys, therefore they move the cursor left and right respectively • J kind of looks like it's pointing down • This only leaves K as the up arrow (the only remaining choice)

I remember them because Ctrl-J is newline (moves down), and the rest are obvious after that.
