Image segmentation is
exactly
what they are trying to do. You can quibble about the exact definition of "background subtraction", but it doesn't change the fact that they are reinventing the wheel over a solved problem.

Right, image segmentation is the correct terminology. Background subtraction is incorrect. I don't think it's quibbling to point that out.
